A bill that would label permitting kids to undergo gender transition treatments as child abuse is being considered by legislators in Michigan, Fox News informed.
Republicans on Tuesday submitted House Bill 6454, which declares that anybody who “knowingly or purposefully consents to, receives, or aids with a gender change surgery for a minor” is guilty of “child abuse in the first degree.”
A “person” in the bill is defined as a parent, guardian, or a qualified medical practitioner.
Republican state representative Beau LaFave, one of the bill’s sponsors, said this week that the idea that we’ll be making possible life changes to 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, and 15-year-old children when in fact, is illegal for the kids to have sex is insane. People are abusing these children, he added.
He also said that this is ridiculous because kids aren’t mature enough to use cigarettes till they are 21.
Republican State Representatives Ryan Berman, Steve Carra, Luke Meerman, and Steve Marino joined LaFave in sponsoring the legislation.
In the state legislature, where Republicans have a slim three-seat majority, LaFave expressed confidence that other Republicans will join him in backing the measure.
If the proposal were to become law, Michigan would become the second state to criminalize parents’ permission for their kids to have gender reassignment surgery.
In the state of Michigan, first-degree child abuse convictions carry a life term.
A similar rule that makes it illegal to give puberty inhibitors or perform gender transition surgery on children went into effect in Alabama earlier this year.
