The Mayor of New York City declared a state of emergency in the metropolis as a way to cope with the influx of migrants arriving from the U.S. southern border in the past several months.
According to Mayor Eric Adams, the city is expected to spend roughly around $1 billion to accommodate over 17,000 new migrants that have been arriving since April.
Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas and a Republican running for a third term in the upcoming midterm elections in the United States, has bused nearly 3,000 migrants to New York. Adams called it a “manufactured crisis” and slammed Abbott for not informing local officials before transporting refugees to the city, Reuters reports.
The actions taken by Abbott are a part of a high-profile push by him and the Republican governors of Florida and Arizona to draw attention to record numbers of crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border in the lead-up to the midterm elections. They contend that Democratic U.S. President Joe Biden has failed to sufficiently safeguard the border.
Additionally, Abbott transported over 900 immigrants to Chicago, and over 10,000 migrants were transported to Washington, D.C., from Texas and Arizona combined.
A group of around 50 migrants were recently flown to the affluent community of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, by Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is viewed as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2024. The passengers on the aircraft claim they were deceived.
The governors are being accused of exploiting people as pawns by Democrats, who have dubbed the actions political spectacles.
A large portion of the migrants transferred to New York are Venezuelans, who the United States cannot send back to Mexico under a COVID-19-related regulation, unlike other migrants.
Since late August, the city of El Paso, which is under Democratic administration, has bused some 7,000 migrants to New York, but local leaders claim they are working in tandem with New York authorities.
There are now more individuals in shelters than ever before because to the spike in arrivals.
Adams added that because of the emergency situation, it will be simpler for city departments to coordinate their reaction more swiftly.
“Although our compassion is limitless, our resources are not,” the mayor said, urging federal and state governments to provide financial support. “We are at the edge of a precipice.”
In order to deal with incoming migrants, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser proclaimed a state of emergency there last month.
