According to various news sources, the Save America PAC contributed $3 million to cover the legal costs of a lawyer that former President Trump retained to serve as his legal advisor while the DOJ examines his handling of official materials at Mar-a-Lago, The Hill reported.
According to three persons acquainted with the arrangement, Save America PAC paid the sum to Chris Kise, who is also defending Trump in the DOJ probe into the January 6, 2021 riot. This information was revealed by POLITICO on Thursday.
To collect money in favor of certain candidates and causes, Trump founded Save America after the 2020 presidential election.
A source with knowledge of the agreement verified the payment, according to CNN.
Prior to this, Kise held the position of Florida’s solicitor general. He has prevailed in several Supreme Court disputes. According to POLITICO, he quit his job at Foley and Lardner to start his own business, Chris Kise & Associates, and take on Trump as a client.
According to Politico, it is unclear if the cash went to a financial institution handled by Kise’s new corporation or one controlled by another organization because it happened as he was undergoing the changeover.
Recently, the DOJ has begun investigating Save America PAC as part of its probe into January 6. In order to gather information on Save America, a federal grand jury has sent subpoenas to more than a dozen people.
A day after a court designated a special master to evaluate the documents the FBI discovered during its investigation of Mar-a-Lago last month, the payment to Kise was made public. As the special master examines the documents to determine which are covered by the executive or attorney-client privilege, the judge also refused the DOJ’s request to see the classified papers it had collected.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear an appeal from the DOJ about the decision.
