The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been busy over the past week, reportedly subpoenaing around 40 of former president Donald Trump’s associates.
It is considered to be a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation by the Justice Department into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and other attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
The 40 subpoenas are related to the actions of Trump, his allies, and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
It also seized two telephones that were apparently in connection with the fake elector plan, which was the alleged plot to overturn the 2020 election by submitting fake electors in seven swing states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Arizona — the states that President Biden won, but Trump thought most likely to be able to steal.
The subpoenas and phone seizures are the latest developments in the sprawling investigation into the former president. Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn was one of the people whose phone was seized.
It comes as the Jan 6 House committee is nearing the end of its investigation. They could decide whether to request testimony from Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence as early as today.
The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot subpoenaed Epshteyn and three other Trump associates — Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and Sidney Powell — in January.
Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik’s lawyer received a subpoena last week.
Separately, the department is engaged in a separate inquiry. The other legal battle with Trump and his counsel comes over documents retrieved during the FBI’s August search of the former president’s Florida estate Mar a Lago after he left the White House.
Among matters that investigators are reportedly looking into are Trump’s post-election fundraising and his efforts to overturn the election by appointing false electors. A grand jury issued subpoenas last week seeking information about Trump’s Save America PAC.
