Justice Dept Asks Judge to Lift Ban on Trump Documents Investigation

The Department of Justice asked a judge to hold off on a temporary ban on the Department’s ability to use files seized from former President Donald Trump in its inquiry.

The Justice Department asked the federal judge to revisit her decision to temporarily block prosecutors from gaining access to classified documents seized from Trump’s Florida estate Mar-a-Lago.

The department argued that the ruling hindered the government’s efforts to determine whether Trump holding onto the top security files compromised national security.

In a pair of filings in federal court, lawyers announced their intention to appeal key parts of Judge Aileen Cannon’s ruling. Cannon was appointed by Trump.

The lawyers said they would ask an appeals court to block the sections of her order if she does not agree to do so herself by Thursday next week.

The order was issued by the Judge on Monday and has prevented the Justice Department from using the documents, some marked as highly classified, in its investigation into how Trump handled top secret documents.

Earlier this week, national security experts weighed in on the matter, saying Trump had absolutely jeopardized and compromised American national security by stashing a bunch of top secret documents around his Florida home.

It is highly expected that foreign spies have gotten their hands on the documents at some point, as some were merely lying around on the floor even. How much damage was done is being evaluated.

Hidden between the lines of the Justice Department’s filing is the implication that Cannon is accomplishing little besides hurting the investigation that seeks to protect national security.

The filing not only gives notice that it plans to appeal her decision but also asks her to enjoin herself by temporarily lifting the ban. The set of just over 100 classified documents is being kept separate from the rest of the documents seized.
