Republican and Democratic voters have different ideas about the essential qualities needed to accomplish the job, according to a recent USA TODAY/Ipsos poll.
Republican voters regard first and foremost a warrior who will fight for “the freedom and dignity of all Americans,” while Democratic supporters claim they want a unifier who would concentrate on uniting the nation and reaching agreements.
Republicans place “bringing the country together” at the bottom of the list, at number four, while Democrats place it at the top of the list when asked to rank nine characteristics in order of significance for the next president-elect. Having “strong policy knowledge and competence” is valued less by Republicans than by Democrats.
Both are considered to be second-place “fights for the people they represent.”
Republican voters in this poll tell us they clearly want a fighter in 2024, and they see Trump as their champion,” Ipsos President Cliff Young says, as quoted by USA Today. “On the other hand, Democrats want someone who is both a fighter and a unifier. Right now, (President Joe) Biden falls short on meeting these two dueling ideals.”
With a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points, the online survey of 2,345 individuals was conducted from August 18 to 22.
The majority of Republican voters believe they already selected the best candidate for 2024. 49 percent believe Trump should be the candidate, but just 41 percent believe the GOP has to reform.
However, a number of Trump backers in later interviews had concerns about the former president’s age and demeanor.
Democratic voters are more enthusiastic about a party change and a fresh candidate for the 2024 election. According to the study, 56% of them believe Biden shouldn’t run for office again, while 44% believe he “deserves re-election.”
