Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican senator, believes that parents ought to play a “primary” role in the education of their children, Fox News reports.
Earlier in August at the Wisconsin State Fair, Johnson reportedly made the remark in an interview with Fox News Digital, according to the site.
Johnson’s remark serves as yet another illustration of the increased pressure being applied by conservative politicians to promote “parental rights” in public schools, The Hill reports.
Since last year, conservative lawmakers have pushed for the removal of harmful materials from schools, claiming that parents have a right to know what their children are learning.
The Wisconsin senator used Terry McAuliffe’s notorious remarks regarding parents’ involvement in schools to contrast his position on education with that of Democrats. McAuliffe stated during one of the discussions that he did not believe parents should make their own selections and influence what curriculum should be taught in schools.
The COVID-19 lockdowns, according to the senator, are to blame for parents becoming more active in their children’s schools.
According to United Press International, school boards in Wisconsin have been the target of at least 17 recall campaigns on how they handled COVID-19.
By threatening to leave their children home on the day that enrollment is tabulated, which affects the district’s financing, parents in Kenosha opposed the mask requirements last year, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
Ron Johnson also criticized the White House for consulting the American Federation of Teachers when determining policies for the CDC.
“I do know the Biden administration looked to the teachers union… to set health policy during the pandemic, which is absurd,” he said. “They were basically doing the bidding of the teachers union in how we harmed our children during COVID.”
