Three US Troops Wounded in Rocket Attacks in Syria

Three US troops sustained minor injuries in two separate rocket attacks on Wednesday on bases at Conoco and Green Village in northeastern Syria that are housing American service members in Syria, the Pentagon announced.

The statement says nothing about whether either location had damage to structures or equipment.

The previous attempt from Iranian-backed forces on the US and coalition troops at the Green Village facility was in January when eight rockets strike around the base and cause minor damage to the base and a nearby mosque.

The statement from the US Central Command says that the rocket attacks led to a quick response by the US forces’ attack helicopters during which Centcom believes up to three suspected Iran-backed militants conducting one of the attacks were killed.

US attack helicopters have also destroyed three vehicles and equipment used to launch some of the rockets, Centcom head Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla said, pointing out that forces are closely monitoring the situation.

Operation Inherent Resolve spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday that some of the rockets malfunctioned, noting that US forces and their Syrian Democratic Forces partners have found two rockets in four rocket tubes about three miles from the base before they could pose an additional threat to the local population.

Pentagon has yet to establish responsibility for the latest attack on the facility to a specific group and no militant group has yet claimed responsibility but it’s fair to mention that the attacks come a day after the US air strikes on Iran-linked infrastructure facilities the city of Deir ez-Zor in eastern in Syria.

According to Centcom’s top spokesman, Col. Joe Buccino, the infrastructure was used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Colin Kahl, said the proportionate and precise strike in Deir ez-Zor was a response to an August 15 attack on the US-run al-Tanf base used by US-backed Syrian opposition fighters.

During the attack with multiple drones strapped with explosives, the US forces shot down one before it could enter the base.
