That indicates, as experts are pointing out, that the Biden administration is worried about the impact on US national security if these extremely sensitive in nature documents get into the wrong hands since only a handful of US officials have clearance to read or possess them.
This kind of intel is highly sensitive especially because it can compromise the methods the US used to surveil foreign governments.
While other countries could consider exposing their secrets as a threat, details on such weapons could give US adversaries insight into US defense posture and help them to develop countermeasures.
It’s not clear if the material in question related to nuclear weapons belonging to the US or some other state or whether the FBI had recovered such documents during the raid.
The former chief of the DOJ’s counterintelligence section, David Laufman, said that if Trump was in fact unlawfully keeping at Mar-a-Lago such documents classified at the highest classification level, that would lend itself to greater motivation for the FBI and the DOJ to recover them as quickly as possible.
After Trump, who’s a Republican, portrayed the unprecedented FBI raid on his home as political retribution, the US Justice Department (DOJ) asked a judge on Thursday to make public the warrant that authorized the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, which means that the public could soon learn more about what investigators were looking for.
DOJ lawyers wrote in the court filing that, under these circumstances, the public’s clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred weighs heavily in favor of unsealing.
On the same day, several media organizations also filed a motion for all documents related to the FBI search warrant to be made public, mirroring the public outcry in the US the raid provoked.
