BA.5 Subvariant Could Get Unvaccinated People “In Trouble,” Fauci Says

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading authority on infectious diseases, acknowledged that people are exhausted after more than two years of the coronavirus pandemic but urged those who had not received their vaccinations to do so now that the most recent BA.5 subvariant of omicron, has taken over as the predominant strain in the U.S., The Washington Post reports.

Fauci stated earlier this week that although individuals who have not been administered a vaccine, as well as those with comorbidities are at the highest risk of consequences from COVID-19, others are not exempt. He made this statement to Los Angeles radio station KNX News.

“If they don’t get vaccinated or they don’t get boosted, they’re going to get into trouble,” he said, as quoted by the Post.

According to the newest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the BA.5 subvariant, which has been dubbed “the worst variant of the virus,” is responsible for as many as 85% of covid-19 cases, with more than 41% of U.S. counties having a high covid-19 community level.

Some medical professionals are worried that not enough individuals are immunized, especially now that the country has abandoned policies and regulations like masking that were intended to help prevent the disease’s spread.

In reality, according to the CDC, the majority of Americans are not up to date on their vaccinations, which are defined as having had the main series and any booster doses advised for that individual.

According to CDC data, 67 percent of Americans have received all recommended vaccinations, but just 48% have also taken the first booster dose. Only 32% of those 50 years and older who are qualified for a second booster have taken it.

As many individuals as possible should be immunized and given booster shots, according to Fauci, to prevent the virus from having “ample opportunity to freely disseminate.” He claimed that if the virus is given that chance, it can carry on mutating.
