The reckless prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, is to blame for the renewed tensions with Serbia, but it’s the US State Department that is enabling him, Richard Grenell, who negotiated a Kosovo-Serbia deal under the Trump administration, stressed on Sunday evening.
Urging Kurti to stop picking fights, Grenell tweeted that whoever says that what’s happening in the Balkans is Russia is trying to manipulate the public, underscoring that it’s Kurti that has made the unnecessary, unilateral moves to reject Serbian IDs and license plates inside Kosovo.
Noting that Kosovo’s PM is living in the past and trying once again to give it to Serbia, Kurti, Grenell called Kurti’s actions foolish and reckless and described him as a far-left radical and experienced fascist.
Noting that even the Albanians know Kurti is the problem, Grenell urged Serbian leaders not to take the bait, blaming at the same time US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who earlier in the week met with Kurti and Kosovo president Vjosa Osmani.
Pointing out that in an effort to overcome the conflict through economic cooperation he had negotiated multiple agreements between Kosovo and Serbia under President Donald Trump, Grenell added that US President Joe Biden has ignored the Balkans.
He also accused the EU of enabling Kurti and Osmani to take power by orchestrating war crimes charges against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to punish him for working with Trump.
After Kosovo police showed up at two administrative crossings with Serbia to enforce Kurti’s decision to confiscate Serbian license plates and IDs, which would’ve effectively cut off the remaining Serbs living in the north of the breakaway province, local Serbs put up roadblocks and Serbian military was placed on high alert.
After a request from the US ambassador in Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier, Kurti’s government announced in the last minutes of Sunday that it would postpone the implementation of its document policy by September 1.
