Backlash at Ted Cruz for Saying Supreme Court Wrong to Legalize Gay Marriage

Conservative Senator Ted Cruz is being slammed for saying the Supreme Court was wrong to legalize gay marriage.

The Republican also suggested that GOP-held states would push to overturn the precedent that was set by the Supreme Court protecting gay marriage rights across the nation, especially after conservatives successfully led a campaign to overturn Roe v Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion.

In 2015, the Supreme Court made the landmark Obergefelle v Hodges ruling that protects gay marriage rights. But now, the Supreme Court — which is supposed to be impartial — is stacked with conservative judges led by ideology.

Cruz said that like Roe v Wade, Obergefelle “ignored two centuries of our nation’s history.” He claimed that marriage was an issue left to the states.

Cruz is a longtime opponent of gay rights and gay marriage. The latest remarks were made in a clip posted on Cruz’s YouTube channel for his podcast.

“The way the Constitution set up for you to advance that position is to convince your fellow citizens, that if you succeeded in convincing your fellow citizens, then your state would change the laws to reflect those views. In Obergefell, the court said, ‘No, we know better than you guys do, and now every state must, must sanction and permit gay marriage.'”

“I think that decision was clearly wrong when it was decided,” Cruz said. ‘It was the court overreaching.”

The remarks landed Cruz, who is familiar with the controversy, back in hot water. Cruz is being condemned for the remarks by the public as well as by fellow lawmakers.

Senator Patty Murray said: “If you thought Republicans were done dragging our country backward — think again. They feel more emboldened than ever to turn back the clock on our rights.”

Former Ohio state senator Nina Turner said Republicans are “coming for everyone’s personal freedom.”

Author Marianne Williamson said, “the fascists aren’t at the gate, the fascists are in the house.”

Author Shaun Proulx said, “everything about Ted Cruz is clearly wrong.”

Historian Thomas Lecaque said: “F*** you Ted Cruz”

After the shock overturn of Roe, experts have warned that conservatives will set their eyes next on overturning gay marriage.
