First Lady Jill Biden was slammed by the Hispanic community and the critics on Monday after she compared Latinos with breakfast tacos, with conservatives mocking the comparison while a major Hispanic activist organization branded her remark disrespectful stereotype.
Jill Biden made the bizarre compliment during her speech to progressive Hispanic voters during the annual conference of UnidosUS in San Antonio, Texas as the Biden administration tried to make inroads with the Latino community which has voiced displeasure with his job performance.
According to US Census data, about 65% of San Antonio’s population of about 1.5 million people is Hispanic or Latino.
She was actually praising civil rights icon Raul Yzaguirre when she made the remark at the largest gathering of Hispanic advocates that used to be known as the National Council of La Raza, which, as the conference notes on its website, is the premier event devoted to the diverse Hispanic community that is moving the country forward.
Yzaguirre led the advocacy organization for three decades.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio was apparently among the first to take notice of Jill Biden’s tacos comment, responding to it by changing his Twitter profile picture to an image of a taco, simply writing: “#NewProfilePic.”
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists panned Jil Biden’s remarks as culturally inappropriate and demonstrating a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region.
NAHJ encouraged her speech writing team to take the time in the future to better understand the complexities of Latinos that should not be reduced to a stereotype since their heritage is shaped by a variety of cultures, diasporas, and food traditions
The First Lady was also mocked for mispronouncing the convenience stores and saying “bogedas.” when addressing the Bronx bodegas.
As Arizona Republican House Rep. Andy Biggs tweeted, “No wonder Hispanics are fleeing the Democratic Party!”.
