The unprecedented and overwhelming cartels-driven invasion of migrants at the southern border is exacerbated by White House policies imposed by President Joe Biden in his effort to eliminate all the policies former President Trump put in place, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott argues.
Five days after multiple counties in his state declared the crisis at the southern border and called him to do the same, the Republican governor made the argument in an exclusive interview on “Sunday Morning Futures”, explaining that it would give the state more power to send illegal immigrants to Mexico.
Warning that the counties in his state are dealing with something completely unprecedented, Abbott reminded that they had the lowest number of migrants coming across the border and apprehensions under President Trump, just two years ago.
He believes that the elimination of the policies Trump put in place by President Biden after he took over led to this chaotic situation at the border with historic, more than 239,000 migrant encounters at the border in May only, and thousands of migrant apprehensions over Independence Day weekend in Texas alone.
Just in the Del Rio sector, which is only one of five sectors in the state of Texas, there were about 5,000 people apprehended or ‘gotaways’ over the Fourth of July, Abbott underscores.
Once an officers’ slang, ‘gottaways’ became official nomenclature for a person that was seen crossing the border illegally but was not apprehended and did not return to Mexico.
According to a new UN migration study – conducted by the Missing Migrants Project and published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – the GOP governor cited, the border crossing between the US and Mexico is the deadliest migration land route in the world with at least 1,238 recorded deaths in 2021, 728 of which occurred on the US-Mexico border.
Less than a week ago, Abbott signed an executive order allowing the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to apprehend and return illegal immigrants – although not into Mexico – who have crossed between ports of entry to the southern border.
