Russia has lost 1,637 tanks – including 35 that Ukraine’s armed forces destroyed in a single day – since its President Vladimir Putin initiated the war in Ukraine on February 24, Kyiv claimed on Friday.
According to Ukraine’s combat losses update – posted by the general staff of its armed forces – the Russian military has also lost 15 warships and boats, 2,685 vehicles and tankers, 3,811 armored combat vehicles, 828 artillery systems, 669 operational-tactical UAVs, 247 multiple rocket launchers, 187 helicopters, 107 air defense systems, 217 aircraft, and 36,900 military personnel.
Ukraine, which regularly provides updates on Russian military losses, wrote on Facebook that the claimed tank losses in the last week ranged from two a day to a high of six.
Russia, on the other hand, rarely discloses its military losses. In its last released details of troop losses on March 25, Moscow reported, as quoted by state media, 1,351 killed and 3,825 wounded soldiers, but no information on military equipment losses throughout the war has been disclosed so far.
Meanwhile, responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stark warning to the West on Thursday that any effort to bring him down will bring Ukraine tragedy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the two-month operation to retake Snake Island in the Black Sea and the raising of the Ukrainian flag on the island was a warning to all Russian forces that Ukraine would not be broken.
Underscoring Moscow’s still open to peace talks, Putin has dared the West to try to defeat it on the battlefield, saying with a dose of irony that the West wants to fight Moscow to the last Ukrainian.
After the Ukrainian blue-and-yellow flag was raised by Kyiv soldiers on Snake Island on Thursday, Russia responded with an airstrike that destroyed that part of the Ukrainian detachment on the island.
