Boris Johnson Has Resigned But is Not Leaving Yet

After days and weeks of mounting pressure, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Thursday that he would step down. But Johnson isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Johnson vowed not to actually leave the office until a successor is chosen, and seems to be dragging out the process.

Lawmakers and the public are calling for Johnson to leave immediately. But Johnson is defying those calls, saying he would keep governing.

Johnson appointed new ministers to replace the massive amount of those who resigned under his leadership this week.

But Johnson did, however, promise that his government would not attempt to implement any new policies or introduce “major changes of direction.” This includes tax decisions.

In his resignation speech, Johnson managed to never once use the word “resign.”

Johnson delivered an ill-tempered exit speech on Thursday. The speech has been called many things by political experts, including “ridiculously graceless”.

But even before his salty speech, Conservative lawmakers’ focus had already shifted to who may be the successor and become the next Prime Minister.

Johnson’s resignation followed a long laundry list of scandals, election defeats, and desertions by his allies. According to the latest polling, the Tory Party’s main opponent, Labour, has the highest lead over the Conservatives since January.

Labour leader Keir Starmer says the public deserves a general election after Johnson’s resignation to choose the next prime minister.

Conservative leaders are lining up to take the Prime Minister’s spot. There is no obvious frontrunner.

One of the fallouts for Johnson of losing the Prime Minister is needing to relocate his wedding to his wife, Carrie. They were set to throw a massive belated wedding party at the Prime Minister’s country house Chequers later in July. But the public called him out for holding onto Prime Minister until he had his party, and the outcry forced them to seek a new venue.
