The US Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley warned on Tuesday that Tehran has enough uranium to make a nuclear bomb within a matter of weeks, emphasizing that it’s something the United States would react to quite forcefully.
In an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), Malley voiced concerns over Iran’s alarming progress in its uranium enrichment program though he claims that Tehran hasn’t resumed yet its weaponization program needed for bomb development.
After the Iranian demands that the US remove the IRGC from its terror blacklist have stalled the negotiations for months, Washington and Tehran have held another round of indirect talks last week in Doha.
However, Malley branded these talks as more than a little bit of a wasted occasion, accusing Iran of adding demands they’ve wanted in the past and have nothing to do with the nuclear deal.
Among the demands that are impossible for any US administration or official to do are guarantees that no future US administration would pull out of the deal, as was the case with former US President Donald Trump.
As has been customary for Biden administration officials, Malley also blamed the current situation on the Trump administration.
The US diplomat warned Iran that sooner or later it must decide if it wants to reach a deal or not because, at some point, it will be a thing of the past. For the time being, Washington still believes that a deal would serve US national security interests.
Meanwhile, multiple diplomats on Malley’s negotiating team have stepped down as a result of the increasing bipartisan opposition to reviving the 2015 nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration.
Although President Biden has allegedly decided that there will be no nuclear deal with Iran, as sources familiar with the talks claim, the US State Department still hopes for the course reversal.
