Following a recount, former hedge fund entrepreneur David McCormick yielded to health guru Mehmet Oz in the Republican primary for a seat in the US Senate in Pennsylvania on Friday, ensuring another Donald Trump-supported nominee in a crucial midterm election, Reuters reported.
According to Edison Research, Dr. Oz triumphed by a total of 916 votes in the Nov. 8 midterm election over Democrat John Fetterman to take Pat Toomey’s place, as the Republican Senator is retiring.
The election is critical for Republicans hoping to retake control of the Senate, which is now held by President Joe Biden’s Democratic colleagues by a razor-thin margin.
According to Edison Research, Oz received 419,643 votes to McCormick’s 418,727.
In the midterm elections, Trump has backed over 190 candidates, attempting to cement his position as the Republican Party’s kingmaker. His selections haven’t always come out on top.
Because his prior candidate in the race pulled out after his divorced wife accused him of physical abuse and he lost a custody fight over his children, Trump nominated Dr. Oz in April.
Dr. Oz and McCormick both promoted Trump’s nationalist “America First” platform.
In November, Republicans want to retake control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. They are in a strong position to reclaim control of the House, allowing them to stymie Biden’s legislative agenda.
Democrats have a greater chance of retaining their razor-thin Senate majority, but they’ll need to win seats throughout the country, particularly in Pennsylvania, to do it.
Fetterman, the state’s current lieutenant governor, stated on Friday that he “nearly died” after a stroke, which he suffered only days before the primary on May 17, and that has kept him off the campaign trail, implying that his condition was more serious than first thought.
