DeSantis vetoes funds for Tampa Bay Rays Training Facility

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) of Florida signed a new state budget on Thursday but also vetoed money for a Pasco County baseball training complex that was to be used by the Tampa Bay Rays, a decision following just days after the MLB team tweeted in support of gun control, The Hill reports.

DeSantis, a staunch defender of gun rights, vetoed funds offered by state Sen. Danny Burgess (R), which had been largely expected to be included in the state budget only a week after the Rays expressed support for gun control legislation.

Instead of covering its game against the New York Yankees on May 26, the team tweeted about gun control on social media platforms in the aftermath of tragic shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.

Brooks Raley, a pitcher for the Rays, hails from Uvalde, a hamlet of 16,000 people where an 18-year-old shooter slaughtered 19 elementary school kids and two instructors.

To raise awareness about gun violence, the Rays teamed up with Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit that fights for gun legislation and education.

DeSantis has kept his decision to refuse financing for the practice facility a secret.
