Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg is Stepping Down

The Chief Operating Officer of the Facebook parent company Meta is stepping down. COO Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down from the top role.

Sandberg first joined Facebook in early 2008, in part of the early heydays of the company, as the Number 2 to the CEO and co-founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

She helped turn the social media platform into an advertising juggernaut and one of the most powerful companies in the tech industry. Facebook at one point had a market cap that topped $1 trillion.

The company’s chief growth officer, Javier Olivan, will now step in to take over as the COO in the autumn of this year. Sandberg will continue to have a role within Meta’s board of directors after she leaves.

There will be an internal reorganization to go along with the change in leadership. Over the next coming months, Meta will transition.

Zuckerberg posted his own Facebook post about Sandberg stepping down, saying that looking forward, he does not plan to replace her role in the existing structure, stating that he was unsure it would be possible “since she’s a superstar who defined the COO role in her own unique way.”

The Meta CEO said that if it were possible to replace Sandberg, Meta has reached a point where it makes sense for the products and businesses, and platforms to be more “closely integrated” rather than each one having separate organizing functions.

Meta has been massively under fire over the past few years. It has a massive influence on the public. But also the company has completely failed to stop the spread of misinformation and harmful material, which has brought the platforms under massive criticism.

Zuckerberg and other top-tier leaders have been made to testify before Congress multiple times over the past three years in particular. Sandberg, however, has managed to mostly escape the spotlight.
