According to the Associated Press, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the former White House press secretary is expected to win the Arkansas Republican gubernatorial primary, Fox News informed.

Former President Trump endorsed Sanders early in the race, and he hopes to succeed incumbent Governor Asa Hutchinson, who is term-limited and has been a governor of the state since 2015.

According to the Associated Press, incumbent Arkansas Republican Senator John Boozman overcame his primary competitors in his bid to keep his Senate seat against a Democratic opponent later this year.

Prior to Tuesday’s election, Sanders, who launched her candidacy for governor in January 2021, routinely polled ahead of her primary opponent, Francis “Doc” Washburn.

Washburn has a national podcast after formerly hosting a radio talk show.

Sanders, a mother of three, was the White House press secretary during Trump’s presidency from 2017 to 2019.

Mike Huckabee, Sanders’ father, was Arkansas’ 44th governor from 1996 until 2007.

Sanders will become Arkansas’ first female governor if she defeats her Democratic opponent in the governor’s race later this year.

The deadline for campaigns to submit their monthly fundraising reports to the state was Monday.

Sanders’ campaign reported having more than $7 million in cash on hand at the end of April.

Last month, her campaign reported spending more than $838,000.

She has raised about $15 million since announcing her candidacy, far outperforming her Republican and Democratic opponents.

Chris Jones, the Democratic Party’s front-runner in fundraising among the five candidates for the party’s nomination, collected more than $161,000 and spent more than $147,000 last month.

Jones has raised $1.8 million and has around $108,000 on hand since entering the race for governor.

During his bid for a second term, Boozman, who also garnered Trump’s backing, received overwhelming support across the state.

He did, however, face criticism from people who were disappointed that he did not favor overturning the 2020 election results.

Former NFL player Jake Bequette was the most strident of Boozman’s opponents, with millionaire Richard Uihlein’s $1.5 million contribution to a super PAC supporting Bequette.

After winning a special election in 2001, Boozman began his political career in the United States House of Representatives.

He held that position until 2010, when he was elected to the Senate for the first time.

Boozman is the senior senator from Arkansas, but he also serves as the dean of the state’s congressional delegation. He is a former optometrist.

In the GOP Senate primary race in Arkansas in 2016, he beat his primary opponent, Curtis Coleman.

In addition to Bequette, Heath Loftis and Jan Morgan ran for the Republican nomination for US Senate in Arkansas.
