According to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion survey released on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden’s public approval ratings plummeted to 36% this week, the lowest point of his presidency, as Americans struggled with increasing prices.
Some 59% of Americans dislike Biden’s job performance, according to a two-day nationwide poll. His average approval ratings dropped six percentage points from last week’s 42%.
Since August, Biden’s support rating has fallen below 50%, fueling fears that his Democratic Party would lose control of at least one chamber of Congress in the November 8 midterm elections.
Biden’s popularity rating inside his own party slipped to 72 percent from 76 percent the week before, indicating waning excitement among Democrats. Barely 10% of Republicans support his presidency.
Even though Biden’s overall popularity rating is low, it is greater than that of his predecessor, Donald Trump, who had a 33% approval rating in December 2017.
Biden has been dogged by a rise in consumer costs in the United States this year, with Russia’s incursion of Ukraine contributing to rising gasoline prices and global supply chains still hampered by the COVID-19 outbreak.
In the United States, the Reuters/Ipsos survey was carried out online in English. A total of 1,005 persons participated in the current survey, comprising 456 Democrats and 358 Republicans. It has a four-percentage-point credibility interval, which is a measure of accuracy.
