Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, launched a campaign Monday to reshape the New York State Assembly in the Progressive image, announcing a slew of far-left endorsements, Fox News informed.
Ocasio-Cortez endorsed nine candidates nominated by the Working Families Party (WFP), a political group dedicated to “social, racial, and economic justice” in New York.
Many of the contenders are seeking to replace Democratic incumbents who are more moderate.
In the Assembly, the Democratic Party already has a vast majority over Republicans.
Ocasio-Cortez said that people cannot wait for a healthcare to be guaranteed, and that they cannot wait for cheap housing to become available, as climate justice cannot be delayed, adding that that is the reason for endorsing and supporting the We Can’t Wait Assembly candidates.
She added that she cannot wait to start working with them once they are elected to ensure that New York is a city that everyone lives in with dignity.
WFP leadership in New York has called for the Assembly to be “transformed,” with Democrats who have previously collaborated with Republicans being kicked out.
Kumar Rao, a senior director of the New York Working Families Party said that 4 years ago their party defeated Independent Democratic Conference members who have caucaused with GOP members and blocked priorities of the working families, adding that since then they have reached numerous goals by strengthening voting rights, adopting new taxes for the rich people, and issue full funding of the public schools.
He concluded that now it is time to transform the New York State Assembly.
The nine candidates now are: Vanessa Agudelo, a democratic socialist, Samy Nemir Olivares a “Latinx Queer” organizer and writer, Keron Alleyne, a “Black Radical”, Jessica Altagarcia Woolford, local activist, Sarahana Shrestha, a climate organizer, Jonathan Soto, a former Ocasio-Cortez staffer, Delsenia Glover, social justice advocate, Juan Ardila, abortion rights and Green New Deal activist, and Justin Chaires, a civil rights leader and a school teacher.
