Gen. Mark Milley told cadets graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point on Saturday that they should expect an increase in the likelihood of global conflict and a slew of new weapons technology during their careers, Fox News informed.
At the 2022 commencement ceremony in West Point, New York, Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the cadets that the world into which they have been commissioned has the potential for a major worldwide confrontation between large countries.
And that potential is growing rather than shrinking.
He also said that right now, in this very time, a fundamental shift in the nature of conflict is taking place and that the US is currently confronted by two global powers, China and Russia, both of which possess major military capabilities and both of which are determined to alter the current rules-based order.
“Aggression that goes unaddressed simply emboldens the aggressor,” Milley remarked of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Milley explained that they should never forget the carnage in Bucha, as well as the killing in Mariupol, adding that supporting their battle for freedom and standing up to tyranny is the best way of honoring their sacrifice.
The fight in Ukraine was “extremely complex and probably certainly decisive in urban areas against elusive, ambiguous foes that blend terrorism and warfare alongside conventional capabilities — all entrenched inside vast civilian populations,” according to Milley.
According to Milley, weapons technology will evolve substantially in the coming decades, with the shift being as profound as the transition from musket to rifle, rifle to machine gun, or sailing to steam ships.
And the technological advantage isn’t always in America’s favor.
Milley explained, that the soldiers will be fighting with robotic tanks, ships, and airplanes adding that a revolution in lethality and precise munitions has occurred. He also said that what
was formerly the exclusive domain of the US military is now available to any country with the financial means to purchase it.”
