White House Press Secretary Slams Abortions Ban in Oklahoma

Karine Jean-Pierre, press secretary of the White House, denounced an Oklahoma measure enacted on Thursday that will prohibit abortions with very few exceptions, The Hill reports.

She slammed the state saying that the Oklahoma legislature’s move is the most drastic attempt to overturn these fundamental liberties that the United States has witnessed to date. Jean-Perre added that this also endorses “Texas’s ridiculous idea” to let private persons persecute or file a suit against their neighbors to provide access to birth control and abortions and assist women in exercising their constitutional rights.

Referencing former President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, the press secretary said that “ultra MAGA officials” were part of a broader plan to remove specific freedoms and rights in the US, advising that others, including marriage equality, as well as the right to contraceptive methods, were also in jeopardy.

According to The Associated Press, Oklahoma legislators enacted legislation that virtually prohibits abortion unless the pregnant woman’s life is in danger or the pregnancy is the product of a rape that has been reported to the police.

Private persons could sue anyone who offers abortions or aid a pregnant person receiving the procedure under the measure, which is identical to legislation approved in Texas last year. Governor Kevin Stitt’s (R) signature is now required.

The bill was introduced after a leaked Supreme Court draft ruling, allegedly authored in February, suggested that the court was preparing to abolish federal abortion rights. The lawsuit is anticipated to be resolved in June.
