Buffalo Shooting Prompts Biden Call for End of ‘Hate-Fuelled Domestic Terrorism’

Buffalo shooting leaves 13 dead

US President Joe Biden urged an end to “hate-fueled domestic terrorism” late Saturday following the Buffalo shooting in a supermarket, The Hill reports.

Terrorist activity is “antithetical” to American principles, according to Biden’s comments.

“Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor,” The Hill quoted Biden’s statement. “We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”

When a shooter opened fire in a Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo on Saturday, thirteen people were shot. Ten individuals were killed, while three more were injured but are likely to live.

Eleven of the thirteen victims that were killed were African-American. An investigation into the situation is underway.

The Buffalo shooting was described as a “straight-up racially motivated hate crime” by Erie County Sheriff John Garcia on Saturday.

Payton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, N.Y., the suspected gunman, traveled for hours to get to the Tops Friendly Market, which is in a primarily Black area, according to police. The gunman was dressed in combat gear and used a helmet camera to live stream the incident on Twitch.

Gendron was charged with one count of first-degree murder and was arraigned Saturday night.

While investigators continue to investigate the motives for the attack, Biden stated on Saturday that hate crimes motivated by race are “abhorrent to the fabric of our nation.”
