Protests Erupt Across U.S. after Supreme Court Doc Leaked on Abortion

After a Supreme Court ruling document was leaked that shows justices are poised to overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade, protests erupted across the United States.

News that the highest court in the country is close to repealing the 1973 decision that legalized abortion across the U.S. led to protests across the U.S., demanding for the protection of women’s rights and healthcare to be upheld rather than stripped away.

From New York to California, pro-choice rallies grew and grew. Thousands flocked to the scene of the ruling in Washington, D.C., the ground zero for the decision, with people hoping that their voices would be heard and make a difference.

Because the ruling is still a draft, people are holding onto a wisp of a chance it could be altered, and that the court will understand that the right to an abortion is part of the constitution. They also hope for the ruling judges to recognize that the large majority of the U.S. actually supports abortion rights, with 80 percent supporting a person’s right to choose.

President Joe Biden warned that if the leaked draft becomes the official ruling, huge changes will come in American law and it could imperil a wide range of other civil rights.

The historic moment has shaken the U.S. to its core. It also highlights the increasingly jagged social and political divisions within the nation.

Biden said that the provision court opinion was “radical.” He said furthermore that if the ruling is handed down, it represents a “fundamental shift in American jurisprudence” and could imperil rights across the U.S., including same-sex marriage and access to contraception.
