White House Correspondents’ Dinner Returns with President in Attendance

Washington D.C. got dressed to the nines this weekend for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, ABC News reports.

The famous event made its grand return over the weekend following two years of being canceled due to the pandemic, and six years after the last time a President attended the event.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden attended the charity event, which took place at the Washington Hilton. It made Biden the first sitting president to do so since 2016.

Former President Donald Trump was not quiet about skipping the event, vocally snubbing his three invitations during his time in office.

Biden referenced Trump during his speech, saying, “We had a horrible plague followed by two years of Covid.”

Biden also joked about his current standing in the polls and described the journalists in the room as the only group of people with a lower approval rating than he has.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is held by the White House Correspondents’ Association, which represents White House reporters. It has been a tradition for more than a century, first beginning in 1921.

The dinner seeks to raise awareness of the First Amendment and raises money for journalism programs, and jokes at the expense of the current White House administration, as well as D.C. as a whole.

This year was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah.

More than 2,000 journalists and politicians joined the festivities. A few celebrities were also in attendance, such as Kim Kardashian, Pete Davidson, and Drew Barrymore.

While the dinner is the main event, the whole weekend sees many different parties and gatherings across the city. Many embassies host events as well.

The pandemic forced WHCA to cancel the dinner in 2020 and 2021. This year, there are some Covid cases on the rise, but organizers said that preventative measures were being put into place, such as ensuring all attendees are vaccinated and must show proof of negative tests to enter.
