Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia texted in then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in just before President Joe Biden’s inauguration to tell Meadows some GOP members of Congress privately suggested former President Trump should declare martial law.
The message appealing to Meadows to press for Trump to overturn his election defeat by invoking martial laws is one of more than 2,000 texts turned over by Meadows to the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection on the capitol.
Text messages obtained by CBS News and first reported by CNN show that Greene messaged Meadows about Marshall law.
“In our private chat with only Members, several are saying the only way to save our Republic is for Trump to call for Marshall law,” Greene texted Meadows on January 17, 2021.
It was one of many texts the controversial representative sent to Meadows in the post-election period.
Greene is fighting a challenge by her constituents to block her from appearing this year on the Georgia ballot again. Greene testified in an administrative hearing at the end of last week that she does not remember whether she encouraged Trump to impose martial law in order to cling to power.
Before Jan. 6, Greene also text Meadows saying “we have to get organized for the 6th,” and requested to meet with Rudy Giuliani. She claimed they were getting “a lot of members on board.”
The texts show that some of Trump’s most ardent allies pressed for Trump to return himself to office, even after the Capitol attack.
The message about Trump potentially invoking martial law comes one month after the idea had been raised in a heated Oval Office meeting a month before, where Trump considered different ways to overturn the 2020 election.
Greene is one of Trump’s fiercest defenders, and also one of the most far-right ones.
