Amazon has received a green light to begin its 3.3 million square foot development plans to build its new second headquarters in the region by a Virginia county council on Saturday.

Amazon’s plans – referred to as “Site Plan #105” – to build a unique, helix-shaped tower as the centerpiece of its emerging second headquarters in northern Virginia were unanimously approved by the Arlington County Board.

The most prominent among the signature features in the plans is a unique biophilic structure called the “Helix”, an amenity-focused building that will include plants native to the Mid-Atlantic region.

Being a closed-off corporate campus, the new Amazon development has caused concern among local residents and critics, which pushed Amazon to provide more resources to the community with their new proposal.

County organizers and Amazon representatives shared blueprints and other planning documents during the hours-long meeting to show how the new proposal will create new job opportunities, transform the community, and increase tax revenue.

Three office buildings, ground-floor and detached retail space, a childcare facility, and a new high school are included in the PenPlace block’s redevelopment in Pentagon City.

Underscoring the new school and improvements to biking and walking areas, the council vice-chair Christian Dorsey shared his support of the new proposal in his closing statement, noting he’s thrilled about the benefits it’ll provide for marginalized people, who have long been left behind.

The new PenPlace will now, according to Arlington County board chairwoman Katie Cristol, offer benefits to every county resident and the opportunity to lift up the Arlington County’s entirety and not only provide something exciting for the nearby neighborhoods.
