British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be fined for breaking lockdown rules, making him the first prime minister to be found breaking the law in living memory.
Johnson, as well as Chancellor Rishi Sunak, will be fined by the police for breaking lockdown laws. Johnson’s wife, Carrie Johnson, will also be given a fixed penalty notice.
All three received notifications of their fines from London’s Metropolitan Police after an investigation into illegal lockdown parties held in Downing Street and in Whitehall, known as “partygate.”
Johnson is the only prime minister in living history to have broken laws, and furthermore, to have broken laws he literally made himself. And even more than that, he also denied that Covid rules were breached, and exposed himself to the charge that he misled Parliament. This is typically on its own a resigning matter in UK Politics.
The Met said it had identified at least 50 breaches of the law as part of its inequity in the partygate scandal. While the police did not specifically name who was fined, Johnson’s office later said that the prime minister and Sunak both had been told they would receive fixed penalty notices for breaking the law.
The announcement received immediate furor. People are demanding Johnson and Sunak resign for breaking the law and repeatedly lying to the British public. The public has also criticized the fact that Johnson and his government buddies wrote laws for the public in one room, and broke them in the next.
What will determine Johnson’s future will be up to the reaction of lawmakers in his governing party, the Conservative party. Only they could force a no-confidence notion for Johnson, and only if 54 of them demand it.
When the news about party gate first broke earlier this year, it was incredibly damaging to Johnson’s reputation and threatened to sweep him out of power. But he remained, especially due to his focus on the Ukraine war, and changing focus away from his own scandals.
