Quoting declassified intelligence files, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated Sunday that alleged Russian war crimes against civilians in Ukraine were organized and planned at the highest levels of the Russian government, Fox News informed.
Sullivan said that according to their declassified documents the Russian government would target those that are opposing the invasion, and will terrorize the population in order to subjugate it.
Sullivan made the remarks during an interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week,” saying that sickening photos of huge casualties in Ukraine were borderline stunning, albeit not unexpected.
Sullivan went on to claim that some of the alleged war crimes could be the consequence of Russian troops’ dissatisfaction and rage after believing they would win a great victory.
He also said that there were some cases where soldiers were getting frustrated by the firing back from the Ukrainians because they have supposedly been told that the battle will not last long and that the Ukrainians will welcome them.
Sullivan explained that when the soldiers realized that this is not what is happening, some of the units were enraged and began doing atrocities and war crimes even without being given orders from above.
However, Sullivan added that the largest part of these atrocities was performed with an order from the Kremlin.
Sullivan was asked in an interview on NBV whether President Joe Biden will follow in the footsteps of the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who went on a surprise visit to Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv over the weekend and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Sullivan stated that although president Joe Biden does not have any evident plans for visiting Kyiv, he is sitting in the Situation Room every day, constantly coordinating and organizing the process of weapon delivery.
