U.S. Sanctions Putin’s Adult Children, Bans All New Investment in Russia

President Joe Biden announced a fresh wave of sanctions against Russia, including sanctions specifically targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two daughters.

Katerina Tikhonova and Mariya Putina are rarely acknowledged by their Russian leader father. But they are now targets of the U.S., accused of hiding Putin’s wealth.

Also part of the new U.S. sanctions is Russia’s biggest public and private banks. American sanctions were announced as the United Kingdom announced further economic sanctions and restrictions on eight Russian oligarchs, and the European Union continues to wrangle over banning Russian coal.

“Full blocking” sanctions by the U.S. will be imposed on the wife and daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as well. So too will members of Russia’s security council, including former president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev.

A senior U.S. official said that the administration believes Putin’s assets are hidden away with family members. The new sanctions will effectively cut off all of Putin’s close family members from the U.S. financial system, and freeze any and all assets they have in the United States.

The announcement of these new sanctions comes following massive international outrage over civilian killings in Bucha. Biden directly linked the sanctions to the Bucha killings, saying that he had made it very clear that Russia would pay severely and immediately for atrocities there.

A new executive order will ban investments in Russia by Americans from any location, another move meant to isolate Russia from the global economy.

Russia’s largest public and private financial institutions, Sberbank and Alfa Bank respectively, are also on the sanctions list. The White House said that all U.S. investment in Russia is now completely prohibited.

Biden labeled the new round of sanctions as “devastating.”

The White House said that the U.S. will work with G7 allied countries and the European Union to impose severe and immediate economic costs on Putin’s regime for its atrocities.
