Two more Republican Senators have announced that they will vote in favor of confirming Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah issued statements late last night saying that they will support the nomination to the top court.
This brings the number of Republican senators in support of Jackson to three.
Murkowski said that after multiple in-depth conversations and deliberate reviews of her records and hearings, she will support the “historic nomination.” Romney then issued a statement that praised Jackson as being well-qualified and a “person of honor,” and congratulated Jackson on her “expected confirmation.”
Last week, Susan Collins of Maine became the first Republican to support Jackson publicly, announcing that she would vote in favor of the nomination and guaranteeing a bipartisan confirmation.
Jackson is unlikely to technically even need Republican votes as the Democrats have half of the Senate seats, plus the Vice President’s tie-breaker vote. But having Republican support is a huge win in making it a bipartisan confirmation, and for efforts to appeal across the aisle.
Murkowski highlighted “corrosive politicization of the review process for supreme court nominees,” and said that her support for Jackson stems from rejecting this politicization. She continued that this is only growing worse and “more detached from reality” every year. Murkowski said that while she does not agree with all of Jackson’s opinions and decisions, her approach is carefully considered and well reasoned.
On Monday, a U.S. Senate panel conducted a deadlocked vote to approve Jackson. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-11 down party lines of Democrats and Republicans on Monday on whether to back the nomination.
The final vote in the Senate will be on Friday. With the three Republicans, plus all Democrats voting in favor of Jackson, her confirmation is expected.
