Last month’s cross-border terrorist attacks by the Houthi militia against critical civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia were strongly condemned on Monday by the members of the UN Security Council, which also underscored the truce will improve regional stability and help alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Yemenis.
UNSC demanded that the Iranian-backed Houthis abide by the terms of the truce – which came into effect on April 2 – and immediately cease all cross-border attacks, reminding them of their obligations under international law, including those related to the civilians and civilian objects’ protection.
Security Council’s members also urged the building of confidence through various measures, such as the re-opening of the Taiz road and the regular flow of fuel deliveries, and called on all parties to work with the UN Special Envoy to accomplish a comprehensive ceasefire and inclusive political settlement.
UNSC expressed full support for the political consultation efforts of the UN Special Envoy, reiterated the urgency of an inclusive process under UN auspices that will be led and owned by Yemen, and underscored the importance of having at least 30% participation by women in line with the Outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference.
The Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue, the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative which launched last week in Riyadh in support of the UN’s own efforts, was welcomed by the UNSC, which underlined the urgent need to fund the humanitarian response to Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.
