President Joe Biden will announce more Russian sanctions this week, this time aimed at hundreds of members of Russia’s lower house of Parliament as the United States and allied countries adopt stronger and stronger measures to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.
The announcement is to be made while a series of global summits take place in Europe on Thursday.
During this time, Biden will be pressuring Western leaders to take even more aggressive stances, especially more aggressive economic actions, against Russia.
Biden and other world leaders will meet in Brussels on Thursday to announce the “next phase” of military assistance to Ukraine, as well as plans to expand and enforce economic measures and sanctions to pressure Russia. They will also announce efforts to further bolster NATO defenses on the defense alliance’s border with Russia.
According to the White House national security adviser, Biden’s trip to Europe is in an effort to ensure a united front that sends a powerful message to Russia that the U.S. and allies are prepared and committed to its support of Ukraine.
Specifics were not discussed about the announcements yet. Officials said that Biden will be finishing the details of the sanctions and the other steps to be taken while he holds the deliberations in Brussels.
Experts say that Biden is facing a steep challenge to confront Putin and his war against Ukraine. Sullivan said that the war will not end “easily or rapidly.”
The newest sanctions will affect hundreds of Russian lawmakers, all members of the State Duma, which is the lower house of Parliament.
Earlier in March, the U.S. announced financial sanctions on 12 members of the Duma. The new announcement being made Thursday will go even further, in what officials have said are “very sweeping” actions.
