No major agreement with Iran that does not have strong bipartisan support in Congress will survive, warns the statement signed by all but one of the GOP senators and released on Monday addressing US President Joe Biden.
The joint statement that only Senator Rand Paul did not sign says it appears that the Biden Administration have given away the store, agreeing to lift sanctions on Iran that were not even placed – in the first place – for its nuclear activities but for Tehran’s ongoing support for terrorism and its gross human rights abuses.
Citing public reports suggesting the Biden administration would lessen restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and weaken sanctions, the letter further says that the deal that’s being negotiated will most likely deepen Iran’s financial and security relationship -including through arms sales – with Russia and China.
Biden administration was also rebuked for failing to adequately consult with Congress and for refusing to commit to submitting a new Iran deal to the Senate for ratification or for review since there are statutory requirements for that that passed on a bipartisan basis in response to the 2015 deal.
Republican senators said they would only support an Iran policy that will constrain Iran’s ballistic missile program, will completely block Tehran’s path to a nuclear weapon, and will address Iran’s support for terrorism.
Urging the administration and the Democrat senators to learn the lessons of the very recent past, GOP senators have warned the Biden administration that they will do everything in their power to reverse a deal that it’ll agree to but that fails to achieve these objectives or makes achieving them more difficult.
