According to authorities, a customer of the Museum of Modern Art whose membership card was recently suspended for disorderly behavior attacked two MoMA staffers on Saturday after they denied him access to the iconic midtown Manhattan venue and then escaped, Reuters reported.
The women, who were the victims, were taken to a nearby hospital with several knife wounds to their upper bodies, but “we’re informed they’re going to be OK,” said John Miller, deputy New York City police commissioner, during a press conference thereafter.
Officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) initiated a pursuit for the perpetrator, who Miller claimed was known to MoMA personnel as a “regular” and to police from past “disorderly behavior” events in recent days, including at least one at MoMA.
According to Miller, the NYPD was unaware of any convictions or other run-ins with the law.
On Friday, the guy received a letter canceling his MoMA membership card, and he turned there late Saturday afternoon “with the declared intention” of attending a film being played at the museum, according to Miller.
According to Miller, when he was told that his membership card had expired and he was denied entry, he grew enraged, leaped over the reception counter, and attacked the two staff. Surveillance video footage saw him departing the museum on foot shortly afterward.
The New York Post published photos of the two ladies being wheeled outside the museum on gurneys to waiting ambulances. The stabbings, according to the Post, sparked a chaotic situation that drove guests to flee the museum, which is known for having one of the world’s greatest and most significant collections of modern art.
