Wizz Air Offers Free Tickets to Ukrainian Refugees

European airline companies are the latest to offer their support to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the country after Russia invaded it.  Wizz Air announced this week that it will be offering 100,000 free seats to Ukrainian refugees on all continental Europe flights that depart from Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary, to wherever they need to go.

The low-cost carrier has its headquarters in Hungary.

When Wizz Air announced the new offering, it also launched a dedicated “rescue” URL for anyone with a valid Ukrainian passport to apply for free flights from these four neighboring countries.

“Rescue fares” are also being offered to Ukrainian refugees. The company said that this is because some refugees have already left Ukraine and could be stranded in other locations, therefore needing flights to other destinations. There will be offers for 29.99 euros for all flights offered in order to help Ukrainians get from different destinations. For more expensive flights to the UAE, Iceland, and Canada, for 69.99 euros.

The company’s CEO Jozsef Varadi said that the company’s hearts are with the Ukrainian people during the crisis. He said that we are committed to helping as many Ukrainian refugees as possible to get to a safe place.

Popular train transport company Eurostar also extended a similar offer, providing free Paris to London tickets to refugees that are fleeing the Russian invasion in Ukraine. However, Ukrainians would still need to arrange a visa for travel into the United Kingdom, which has not yet opened its borders fully to Ukrainian refugees.

The UK has been under fire for not doing more for refugees, as only 300 visas have been granted to Ukrainian refugees under its new scheme so far.

More than two million refugees have left Ukraine since Russia invaded the country. The UN high commissioner for refugees called it the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe to happen since World War II.
