US Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Warsaw, Poland, and Bucharest, Romania, the White House informed in a press statement on Friday in the face of Russian aggression.
Harris’ March 9-11 visit is aimed to demonstrate the NATO Alliance’s strength and unity and the American support for NATO’s eastern flank allies to highlight the collective efforts to support the people of Ukraine as Russian troops approach Kyiv.
During Harris’ overseas trip, she will meet with the leaders of Poland and Romania to discuss the continuing support of the US for the people of Ukraine through security, economic, and humanitarian assistance.
She’ll also emphasize Washington’s determination to impose severe economic consequences on Russia and those complicit in Russia’s invasion in response to Moscow’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
On top of advancing the close coordination of the US with its allies, the Vice President’s meetings will also focus on how the US can further support Ukraine’s neighbors that welcome and care for refugees fleeing violence.
According to the United Nations, over a million refugees have fled Ukraine with most of them going to Poland while others have gone to Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his growing frustration with NATO’s refusal at Friday’s summit to establish a “no-fly” zone over Ukraine, accusing the alliance of giving the green light for the further bombing of Ukrainian cities.
Zelensky believes that ‘closing the sky’ would change the trajectory of the war but stressed that NATO fears it would spark a direct conflict with Russia and pointed out that those who oppose the move bear responsibility for civilian deaths going forward.
Ukrainian President underscored that because of NATO’s weakness and disunity, all it has managed to do so far is to carry fifty tons of diesel fuel for Ukraine, asking if this is the alliance they were building.
