Russian Forces Close in on Ukraine’s Capital as Death Toll Mounts

A 40-mile Russian military convoy is approaching Ukraine’s capital city, while Russian military forces carried out more deadly attacks across the country. Satellite images are showing the convoy, made up of tanks and armored vehicles, advancing on the ground towards Kyiv.

An attack on Kyiv’s main TV tower also was carried out on Tuesday.

In Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, intense shelling continued on the sixth day of the Russian invasion. A missile hit the main square of the city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack was a “war crime.”

The death toll of civilians is mounting. The United Nations human rights office said that at least 136 civilians have been killed by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, including at least 13 children.

The death toll is feared to be considerably higher according to the U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet. Bachelet said that the majority of civilians have been killed by explosive weapons that have large impact areas.

Nearly 700,000 Ukrainians are estimated to have fled the country, with many heading into countries within the European Union. It is now estimated that 680,000 Ukrainians have fled according to United Nations figures released on Tuesday.

The U.N. high commissioner for refugees said that it could amount to Europe’s largest refugee crisis this century. More than half have gone to Poland, and others are going to Romania, Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia.  There are huge waits on both sides of border crossings as thousands flood out of the country.

During his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, President Joe Biden spent the first 12 minutes on Ukraine, condemning Russia’s invasion and applauding the bravery of Ukrainians. Biden also announced that the U.S. has joined its European and Western allies in closing airspace to Russian planes. This was applauded by lawmakers from both sides of the aisle.
