Biden Appoints DHS as Principal Agency for Russia-Ukraine Conflict

President Biden has designated the Department of Homeland Security as the principal government entity for coordinating domestic readiness and response actions connected to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, according to the department, Fox News informed.

Despite a plea from 14 Republican AGs this week for the resignation of Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s appointee who runs the 240,000-employee agency with a projected annual budget of more than $52 billion.

According to the strategy, DHS is set to establish a plan across the federal government for response to possible future homeland threats, create and pursue strategic goals and policies, and collaborate with officers from different federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial organizations to support the objectives and priorities, a news release from Homeland Security states.

According to the announcement, all of the agencies are being asked to increase their physical and cyber resilience, with recommendations available on the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s “Shields Up” portal.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a dire warning about potential terrorism within the United States earlier this month, stimulated by rising Russia-Ukraine frictions and many recent domestic offences, including the January synagogue hostage event in Colleyville, Texas, according to The Hill.

Although Russia was not explicitly mentioned in the DHS recommendation, a senior DHS source told CNN that the country was regarded “one of the foreign unfriendly powers that was involved in a sustained degree of information influence activities against the United States.”

However, U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., objected to the same DHS recommendation, claiming that it was attempting to control “the speech, beliefs, and opinions of American people” by asking the public to report “possible threats.”

She claimed that the Biden administration sees differing political viewpoints as a threat.
