Lukashenko Denies Belarus Troops Invaded Ukraine

Following the accusations of the Ukrainian border guards against Minsk earlier in the day, claiming some of the Russian troops entering Ukraine came from neighboring Belarus’ territory, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has denied claims that his country has an active part in the Russian attack on Ukraine.

The Ukrainian State Border Service claimed previously on Thursday that the state border of Ukraine was attacked by Russian troops coming from and supported by Belarus.

The border service said, according to CNN, that the attacks occurred in the regions of Luhansk, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr, areas located on Ukraine’s eastern and northern borders.

The source also claimed that an additional attack took place from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea side.

Although a US defense official noted that the Pentagon is following reports that artillery, heavy equipment, and small arms were aimed at border units, border patrols and checkpoints, and of troops entering Ukraine from Belarus, it was unclear if the troops were strictly Russian or also Belarusian.

Branding the people behind Kyiv’s statement exceptional scum, the Belarusian president asserted that Belarus troops are not taking any part in this operation nor is the operation supported by Minsk.

Lukashenko spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the early hours of Thursday, after he allegedly called to inform him about the military operation on Ukraine that Moscow was launching.

According to Belarus President, Putin told him the aim of the operation was to stop the genocide of the people in Ukraine’s breakaway republics Donetsk and Lugansk and to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine.

Lukashenko also said he personally suggested Putin leave a certain number of the Russian armed forces in the south of the country despite the end of their joint military drills on Belarus territory earlier this month.
