On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris warned that the world is facing “the real potential of war in Europe,” and that the United States may “pay some price” if Russia attacks Ukraine.
“It’s been over 70 years … as I mentioned yesterday, there has been peace and security. We are talking about the real possibility of war in Europe,” Harris told reporters at the Munich Security Conference, as quoted by The Hill.
However, Harris indicated that the Biden administration continues to feel that a “diplomatic resolution to this moment” would be in everyone’s best interests.
When asked what Americans could expect if conflict broke out in Europe, Harris said they should be ready.
Harris also appeared to be responding to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request for pre-emptive penalties on Russia.
On Sunday, Kamala Harris restated the United States’ position that penalties must be used as a deterrent.
Hundreds of artillery rounds detonated along the contact zones between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine, prompting these statements. Thousands of Ukrainians were relocated to Russia by rebels, many of whom had already been awarded Russian citizenship.
According to The Associated Press, Moscow may use accusations that Russian people are in danger in Ukraine as grounds for invading Ukraine.
A Belarusian defense official announced on Sunday that military drills between Belarus and Russia will be prolonged due to the “deterioration of the situation” in eastern Ukraine.
