Disney Creating New Residential Communities

Do you wish you lived in a fairytale? Disney announced “Storyliving by Disney,” which will be a community with about 2,000 housing units for fans who want their Disney stories to never end.

Storyliving by Disney will operate as part of Disneys’ theme parks division, with a series of master-planned residential communities that are designed by the company’s creative staff to create the same pampered tranquility that its resorts promise.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products executive Helen Pak painted a picture in a promotional video of an “energetic community with the warmth and charm of a small town and the beauty of a resort.”

The first and only location so far has been announced. The community will be named Cotino, and will be built in the city of Rancho Mirage, which lies in California’s Coachella Valley. Walt Disney himself once lived in the Coachella Valley.

Villas, condos, and housing complexes are included in the concept drawings for Cotino, all surrounding a 24-acre “grand oasis.” Amenities being drawn up include dining, shopping, and entertainment, as well as a beachfront hotel and a clubhouse. The clubhouse promises to host Disney programming, activities, and entertainment.

It will not be completely blocked off to the public. Those who do not wish to live in a Disney community but want to visit can buy a day pass. Part of the development will be set aside for the retirement community, reserved for residents aged 55 and older.

Pricing to live within Disney has not yet been announced. Nor has the construction calendar or when the gilded gates may open for move-in.

While Disney is the one branding and marketing the communities, it will not technically be the company owning, building, or selling the homes. Third-party developers will work in partnerships with Disney to carry out this part.

Disney hopes its hardcore fans can live “happily ever after” within its own dream world.
