Some US lawmakers that were hoping the Canadian Freedom Convoy will expand south of the border are now threatening to investigate GoFundMe after it shut down fundraising behind the movement.
GOP Senator Ted Cruz called on Tuesday the government officials’ efforts to suppress the peaceful protest abuse of power, compounded when GoFundMe tried to effectively steal more than C $10 million raised to support the Canadian truckers – at the Canadian government’s explicit behest.
The movement that initially started against the vaccine mandate for truckers and has now turned into a massive stand against public health measures is occupying downtown Ottawa for more than a week now.
GoFundMe shut down the Freedom Convoy fundraiser last Friday after the Canadian law enforcement provided them with ‘evidence’ that the demonstration that was previously peaceful is now an occupation laced with violence and other unlawful activity.
Sen. Cruz said that GoFundMe, which initially said it would give a refund to any donor who requested one, later backed down after public blowback from Republican officials in the US and when the public outrage was so great and announced it would allow automatic refunds.
However, the Texas Republican stressed that it’s extraordinarily dangerous for Big Tech oligarchs to agree to be the enforcement arm of government authoritarians and informed he has sent a letter to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTS) on Sunday demanding a probe into whether GoFundMe committed a deceptive trade practice.
Cruz was joined in demanding FTC’s investigation by several other Republican state officials, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who have pledged to scrutinize GoFundMe’s trade practices.
Paxton also called GoFundMe a ‘BLM-backing company’ that went woke, froze the funds, and failed to deliver Texans’ money.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Convoy has relaunched its fundraiser on GiveSendGo, the #1 Free Christian Crowdfunding Site, as it describes itself, as and has so far brought in more than C$8 million which enabled it to quickly pivot.
