Russia’s permanent representative to UN in New York, Vassily Nebenzia, blasted on Monday at a United Nations Security Council meeting what he described as the war-like rhetoric of the West over Ukraine, Russian media report.
Nebenzia accused the Western partners of trying to spark a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that they themselves ramp up the tension and provoke an escalation with their rhetoric while talking about the need for de-escalation.
The Russian diplomat stressed that even the talk about an impending war is provocative in itself, saying that it looks as if they want to make their allegations a reality.
The top Western politicians and media have repeatedly warned over the past few months of an allegedly imminent “invasion” of Ukraine being prepared by Russia despite Moscow consistently denying the claims.
Nebenzia has also rubbished Western accusations that Russia is amassing troops on the Ukrainian border touting them as proof of invasion plans, asking where they got the figures from, underscoring they’re false.
He also stressed that such highly charged rhetoric surrounding Ukraine benefits only the West and, in particular, the US which, as Nebenzia pointed out, seems ready to sacrifice Ukraine to its geopolitical interests.
However, he noted that Moscow still believes that the United States should encourage the Kyiv government to implement the Minsk agreements instead of sabotaging them all the time, pointing out that he sees no direct link between the Ukraine situation and the ongoing Russian-US talks on security matters.
The high Russian diplomat also emphasized the fact that even Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has downplayed the alleged ‘Russian threat’ and has been urging the West to tone down the rhetoric.
On Friday, Zelensky said that Kyiv has not been “seeing any greater escalation than it has been before,” whereas press coverage and political statements looked like “we are at war already.”
