Sanders Urges Lawmakers to Bring ‘Spending Plan’ to Senate Floor

Bernie Sanders talks spending plan

Senator Bernie Sanders said it’s essential for Democrats to abandon Joe Biden’s spending plan and allow senators to vote on elements of the president’s major economic measure before attempting to pass the rest as a package, as reported by Bloomberg.

Sanders spoke on “State of the Union” on CNN where he called for voting after six months of “so-called negotiating” with Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, adding that lawmakers need to bring crucial bills that affect working families directly to the Senate floor.

Biden’s tax-and-spending proposal, entitled Build Back Better, requires only 50 votes in the Senate to be approved under reconciliation and dodge a GOP filibuster. Talks have stretched on for a year, lowering the president’s and his party’s approval ratings as Sinema and Manchin refuse to agree on crucial provisions of the package.

Sanders pushed for compelling senators from both parties to take a stance on parts of the spending plan that are popular with large swathes of the American public, such as negotiating the pricing of prescription medications, which has piqued bipartisan interest.

Biden indicated on Wednesday that his $2 trillion spending package would most likely have to be torn up in order for a scaled-back version to pass Congress despite opposition from within his own party.
