The American Embassy in Kyiv has reported that military supplies to help Ukraine defend itself against a possible Russian attack started to arrive on Friday night, Bloomberg reports.
According to a tweet from the embassy, the cargo “contains approximately 200,000 pounds of deadly aid, mainly ammunition for Ukraine’s first-line troops.”
Large green containers were being delivered at an airport as shown in photos that were tweeted. The embassy didn’t go into detail or say what else was delivered with the shipment, only that it was the first cargo of help recently authorized by President Joe Biden.
The announcement came at the conclusion of a tense week in which a Russian attack on Ukraine appeared increasingly possible. Despite the fact that Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met in Geneva and failed to negotiate a deal, both parties decided to continue negotiations.
Russia has amassed a strong-armed force on its border with Ukraine and has dispatched the troops to Belarus, Ukraine’s northern neighbor, for joint military exercises to commence on February 10.
Putin has requested security assurances that would exclude Ukraine from ever joining NATO and compel the alliance to revert to positions it had in 1997 when Central and Eastern European countries joined the organization.
Those requests have been rejected by the United States and its NATO members. Putin has stated that he has no intention of invading Ukraine.
Biden intends to convene his national security staff at the end of the week at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
Press Secretary for the White House Jen Psaki said that the Capitol was not expecting any developments, however, they have reached “a clearer path” of understanding.
