Israeli forces stationed in the Golan Heights opened fire on Syrian territory, the Israel Defense Forces said.
According to the Israeli side, “during operational activities in the central part of the Golan Heights,” the Israeli military “spotted a group of suspects” not far from their location.
“The soldiers and tanks opened fire in their direction, after which the suspects fled to Syrian territory,” Syrian news agency SANA reported.
Additionally, “Israeli occupants fired at the outskirts of the village of Al-Hurriyah near Quneitra with tanks.” Helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft of the occupiers are flying over the area intensively.
Last fall Damascus accused Israel of killing the head of the Syrian department of the Golan. The Golan Heights are a disputed territory in the Middle East, the main part of which controlled by Israel, while Syria controls the eastern region.
From 1944 to 1967, the Golan Heights were part of the Syrian province, after which Israel captured part of the territory. In 1981, the UN Security Council, by resolution 497, declared the annexation invalid. In 2019, the UN confirmed that the status of the Golan Heights will remain unchanged.
